Platelet Rich Plasma

What is PRP & PRF Therapy?

Both therapies Platelet rich plasma (PRP) and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) both use the same technique. They’re a treatment that uses plasma from the patient’s own blood to regenerate and heal soft tissues within the body. By simply drawing a sample of the patient’s own blood that contains plasma and placing it into a centrifuge machine that separates plasma cells (cells containing growth factor) from the rest of the blood.

From there, the treatment area will be injected with the plasma. After the injection, the platelets begin to break down and release their incredible growth compounds. These, in turn, help to trigger the body’s natural healing process, which can result in a rebuilding of tissue.

PRP therapy can be used to treat a wide range of injuries and ailments, including joint injuries and arthritis-related joint pain. However, it also has great cosmetic benefits and is often used in areas like under the eyes, around the neck, and in the hands to promote more youthful-looking skin.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a second generation to PRP. PRF, is an all-natural solution that can treat multiple areas in the face that show the first signs of aging. Most popular areas to treat are the hollow under-eye, scalp for hair restoration, and deflated cheeks.

What is the difference Between PRP & PRF?

Accumulated PRP has platelets, fibrin and white blood cells, which aids in achieve wound healing, collagen production and improved elasticity. PRF contains a very high concentration of white blood cells, fibrin and a small number of stem cells found circulating in our bloodstream. PRF becomes a gel like substance after about 15 to 20 minutes of being isolated and immediately upon being injected into the face or scalp. This process allows it to be used for cosmetic volume and hair restoration.

What are the benefits?

Simple and Minimally Invasive

These treatments are relatively quick, simple, and minimally invasive. Depending on the areas of the body being treated with either of these injections, most patients can expect the treatment session to last for just about 30 minutes.
Depending on the desired treatment area, there is virtually no downtime Patients who receive these injections can continue on with their day as soon as they leave the office.

Relief From Joint Pain

Whether you suffer from arthritis or have simply been noticing joint pain, a PRP injection can be used to help reduce painful inflammation and encourage healthy tissue growth. In some cases, PRP therapy may even reverse joint damage by rejuvenating the hyaluronic acid that is responsible for lubricating the joints.

Encourage New Hair Growth

Those with hair loss may also benefit from PRF injections. In this application, PRF is injected into areas of the scalp where hair loss has occurred. From there, these injections have shown great results by increasing blood supply to the hair follicles, thus stimulating new hair growth. Typically, PRF therapy for hair loss is done in a series of three treatments that are completed approximately four to six weeks apart.

Enhance Skin Appearance

Both therapies can also be used to improve the aesthetic appearance of your skin; these injections are commonly used underneath the eyes, for example, to help regenerate collagen and elastin that creates a more youthful appearance while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Plasma replacement therapy can also be effective in other areas of the body where the skin is prone to wrinkling and sagging, such as the neck and hands. These injections are great for scarring and can help with overall rejuvenation.

Are You a Good Candidate?

The best way to determine whether PRP/PRF therapy is right for you to is to schedule a consultation in our office. Most people are viable candidates, although those with certain medical conditions (such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, significant anemia, blood disorders) or current infections should not receive these injections. The same applies to those who have been in remission for cancer for less than five years.

What to Expect

If you decide to proceed with either PRP or PRF treatments, you may be wondering what to expect from your first session. Most platelet replacement sessions last for about 30-45 minutes and will begin with drawing a sample of blood. The sample will then be placed in a centrifuge to concentrate the plasma cells for collection.

Next, the treatment area will be numbed with a topical solution before the injections are completed. Most patients will notice an improvement within a week or two (and more significant results after four to six weeks. Growth and healing will continue for up to twelve weeks, though this can vary depending on the specific treatment you have received.
