What Is Dysport?
Dysport is a prescription injection derived from botulinum toxin Type A. It is used primarily to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows without changing the look or movement of the rest of the face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely express feelings.
How Does Dysport Work?
Dysport works by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles, thereby reducing muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dysport?
Good candidates for Dysport are adults under 65 years of age who want to improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. It is important for patients to have realistic expectations and to be in good general health.
How long does a Dysport treatment last?
The results of a Dysport injection are temporary. Patients may begin to see improvement in their frown lines within two or three days after treatment, with the peak effect occurring at about 30 days. The results can last up to 4 months, but this can vary from person to person.
What Are the Side Effects of Dysport?
The most common side effects are nose and throat irritation, headache, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, eyelid drooping, sinus inflammation, and nausea. Serious side effects can include allergic reactions such as itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, dizziness, or feeling faint. Get medical help right away if you experience any of these serious side effects.
Can Dysport be used for treatments other than frown lines?
Yes, Dysport is also used for treating certain types of muscle stiffness and spasms, and conditions such as cervical dystonia in adults. It may also be used off-label for other cosmetic purposes and medical conditions as determined by a healthcare provider.
Can I return to normal activities after receiving Dysport?
Yes, if you choose to resume your regular activities, you can with a few precautions. To prevent the product from spreading to adjacent muscles, stay upright for at least four hours following injections and avoid strenuous physical activities and pressure on the treated areas.
