Summer’s Almost Here: Get Your Skin Ready With IPL Treatments

One of the biggest benefits of living in Southern Florida is its year-round sunshine. It’s also what makes it a major tourist destination for travelers from throughout the U.S. and around the world. There’s no doubt about it: Sunshine does wonders for your outlook and your mood. But unfortunately, too much sun exposure can also wreak havoc on your skin. All it takes is a little exposure of the sun’s UV rays to cause changes in the pigment and texture of your skin. And while the damage might not be so apparent when you’re young, as you get older, problems caused by UV damage become a lot more visible. Even acne scars become more noticeable as skin loses some of its natural “plumpness.”

The good news is, at 5th & Wellness, we offer state-of-the-art IPL treatments to help patients reduce or eliminate skin damage, restoring and refreshing skin so it looks radiant and beautiful. There’s no downtime after IPL treatments, and if you schedule your treatment sessions now, your skin can look its youthful best by the time beach season is in full swing. Sound good? Then read on to learn more about IPL and how it can help your skin.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light, and like laser therapy, it uses light to refresh and renew damaged skin. But unlike ablative lasers that use intensely-focused beams of light to create a sort of “controlled damage” in your skin, IPL uses steady pulses of broad-spectrum light that can be filtered and adjusted to suit your needs, your skin type and other factors. That means your results can be customized to help you get the results you’re looking for, so your skin looks its best at every age.

How does IPL work?

During treatment, the IPL applicator is placed on your skin in the area that’s damaged. The applicator emits light energy that’s absorbed deep into your skin, so it can reach the tissue that’s damaged. More energy is absorbed into darker areas, like sunspots and scar tissue. As the energy “soaks in,” it gently heats up damaged tissue, breaking it apart into tiny fragments. In the days and weeks following your treatment, your body’s natural waste system carts these tiny fragments away and eliminates them, so you’re left with clearer, healthier-looking skin.

And that’s not the only benefit of IPL. That gentle heat also helps constrict or tighten tiny blood vessels in your skin, reducing redness and other pigment irregularities for smoother skin tone overall. Plus, by heating your skin’s deeper layers, IPL promotes production of collagen, a “building block” of firm, youthful skin. When we’re young, our bodies produce plenty of collagen, and that helps our skin look and feel soft, smooth and resilient. But as we age, we produce less collagen, and years of sun damage can reduce production even more. By stimulating natural collagen production, IPL can restore some of skin’s natural elasticity, reducing the appearance of wrinkles while helping your skin feel firmer and more responsive.

What problems can be treated with IPL?

At 5th & Wellness, we use IPL to treat an array of skin issues, like:

  • Sun spots
  • Age spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne scars and other superficial scars

IPL can be used on your face, your neck or your chest, including the décolletage area. Plus, it can be a really good option for treating the backs of your hands — one of the first areas of your body to show the signs of aging and sun damage.

How long will my results last?

IPL treatments can last a year or longer with good skin care (like wearing sunscreen). The best part: You can have multiple treatments spaced a few weeks apart to get the results you need to look and feel your best. Regular touch-up treatment can prolong those results, even after a year.
